For many families, children's education is one of the most important, if not the deciding, factor when choosing where to live. The findings of Knight Frank's last European Lifestyle Report reflect this priority, with international schools ranking as the second most important consideration for those relocating to Europe.

Curriculum is often a key part of the decision-making process. Whether families opt for the International Baccalaureate, British, American or other education systems, each pathway offers distinct advantages depending on future university ambitions or potential relocation plans.

Exceptional schools are also frequently found within established, welcoming communities that offer the broader lifestyle features many families seek. High-quality healthcare, excellent transport connections, cultural attractions and recreational amenities all play an important role in shaping a successful family move abroad.

Mark Harvey, Knight Frank's Head of International Residential, says that taking a long term yet flexible view of education is often central to achieving a seamless relocation.

ā€œWe’re seeing more families planning a four- to five-year stint abroad – long enough to settle in, explore schools, and test the lifestyle, yet short enough to remain flexible,ā€ he says.

ā€œThe most successful moves I’ve seen are those where people plan for change from the outset: arranging visas and tax strategies, choosing a home that will resell easily, and creating a school plan that works whether you decide to stay longer – or leave sooner.ā€

With that in mind, we explore a selection of exceptional homes located close to some of the world's leading international schools, where high-quality education is matched by an equally appealing lifestyle.

Switzerland

As the birthplace of the International Baccalaureate, educational excellence is woven into Swiss culture. Switzerland remains one of the world’s most sought-after destinations, consistently ranking highly for quality of life, economic stability, healthcare and education. From the Swiss Matura to British and American curricula and the International Baccalaureate, families can choose from a wide range of educational pathways.

Italy’s prime residential markets continue to strengthen, with lifestyle remaining a key driver of demand. From the tranquillity of Lake Como to the energy of Milan and the cultural heritage of Rome and Florence, the country attracts an increasingly international audience. Favourable tax incentives and a relative price advantage compared with other major European hubs further enhance its appeal for relocating families.

Over the three years to 2025, prime prices in Florence increased by 18%, supported by annual growth of around 6% to 7%. Alongside its rich history and vibrant cultural scene, the city benefits from a strong selection of international schools. This four-bedroom villa in the Florentine hills offers peace and privacy while remaining within easy reach of the city centre, and is well positioned for the International School of Florence, one of Europe’s oldest international schools.

Portugal

As explored in Knight Frank’s Lisbon Residential Market Insight, Lisbon has evolved from a primarily investment-driven market into one where lifestyle is the dominant attraction, drawing a broader mix of relocators and second-home buyers.
