In the centre of the town, quiet streets offer superb apartments in stunning authentic buildings with balconies overlooking the neighbourhood.

Inside Uzès

The virtually car-free town of Uzès is packed with exceptional Renaissance architecture, and its dreamy streets and squares are populated with plane trees.

While it’s a peaceful town, it has a vibrant community, with a lively, twice-weekly farmers market and a superb gastronomic scene.

The rural town is surrounded by other small medieval villages scattered around the beautiful countryside but is just over half an hour from Nîmes and roughly 45 minutes from Avignon.

Landscape

The stunning town is in the middle of Le Gard in the Occitanie region of southern France and its slightly elevated position gives it views over the surrounding countryside.

The wider Gard area includes exceptional wilderness to explore, including Cévenne National Park and the wetlands of the Camargue in the delta of the River Rhône.

Education

Uzès is an excellent location for families who are considering relocating to the area, with the École Montessori d’Uzès based in the town, which caters for children aged 3-12, while Nîmes has several international schools, including the HDN Academy.

For further education, the Montpellier University is regarded as a top 10 French university, while the University of Nîmes is another option nearby.

Activities and Entertainment

Taking in the vibe of Uzès in the town’s heart, Place aux Herbes, is a joyful experience, with its pale limestone buildings hosting exceptional shops and cafés, and the twice-weekly market setting up shop here.

The town has various stunningly preserved architectural sites, including its fortified château, Duché, and the Cathédrale St-Théodont, which is built on the site of a Roman temple.

For a bit of relaxation, the Jardin Médiéval gardens house plenty of plants and flowers as part of a leisurely stroll, while a bit of exursion to climb the Tour du Roi’s 100 steps is rewarded with picturesque views across the town and beyond.

Art and Culture

Uzès boasts a rich culture thanks in part to its designation as a ville d’art, which meant the French government invested money into the town to help restore it.

The town has a host of small art galleries, while for something entirely different, its Musée du Bonbon Haribo, which sits on the outskirts of Uzès, captures the production process of the aforementioned sweetmaker.

There’s an excellent events diary in Uzès too, with the Nuits Musicales d’Uzès, an international festival of baroque music and jazz being a summer highlight.

Food and Drink

Uzès is well-known in the area for its exceptional bistros and restaurants, with the Michelin-starred La Table d’Uzès serving up captivating modern creations.

The town excels in treats too, with its exquisite ice-cream shop La Fabrique Givrée serving up tantalising flavours, while its La Nougatine bakery is renowned for its figatine (brioche filled with figs). The town also celebrates its local produce at festivals throughout the year, including a truffle fair and a garlic event.

The vineyards surrounding the town sit within the Duché d’Uzès AOC, which controls the quality of wine produced in the region. Grenache and Syrah are popular red grapes, while Rousanne, Viognier and Chardonnay are beloved white varieties.

Accessibility

Nîmes Airport is just a 45-minute drive from Uzès, and Monpellier-Méditerranée Airport and Marseille Provence Airport in Bouches-du-Rhône is just over an hour away.
