Next Neighbourhoods: Phuket, Thailand

Risinee Sarikaputra, Knight Frank Thailand, tells us why Phuket is the new Cote d'Azur of Asia. Miles of white beaches and turquoise sea, this area is ideal as a secondary residence for those that wish to escape the buzz of city life

Describe the area

Phuket is a popular beach destination along Thailand’s southern coast. With its fine white sands, glittering seas and lively towns, the city has something for everyone, whether they’re seeking a relaxing getaway, exhilarating island-hopping or endless parties.

Why is the area up and coming?

Just an hour’s flight from Bangkok and between two to three hours from the major regional air hubs of Singapore and Hong Kong, the city has long been a popular tourist destination for both locals and Asia-Pacific travellers looking for a short getaway. Coupled with Thailand’s inexpensive currency, Phuket has in recent years seen a boom in tourism from Chinese and Russian tourists, fuelling demand for hospitality-driven real estate.

My favourite bits

Strolling along the 6km Bang Tao Beach lined with luxury resorts and villas, its fine soft sand lapped by the crystal clear waters of the Indian Ocean. Then having the option to head into nearby Cherngtalay Town with its mixture of street side shops and large malls or make the 20-minute drive to Patong for its nightlife.

Who’s buying?

Asia-Pacific investors from Singapore, Hong Kong and China along with Russians continue to be major sources of demand. Resort condominiums that come with rental guarantees are particularly in demand.

What will my money buy me?

Budget up to Bt8 million for a typical resort condominium, while luxury high-end villas go for at least Bt35 million.
