Classic cars are one of the best performing assets in our Luxury Investment Index, but why? They are, after all, just machines using inefficient and outdated technology.

Stories. That to me is the answer. Every car has its own history, its own adventures, its own japes and probably plenty of scrapes. Tales to be told and shared with fellow enthusiasts. Few other asset classes, however valuable or beautiful, can match it.

A car is also nothing without its driver. Their fates are intertwined, adding an entirely different element to ownership that exists far less frequently with say a picture, a bottle of wine or a piece of furniture.

It was therefore fascinating to have the opportunity to talk to two of the classic car world’s most interesting characters – enthusiast and industry advocate HRH Prince Michael of Kent, and Bonham’s Group Chairman of Motoring Jamie Knight - and hear so many of their stories and adventures.

From His Royal Highness’s journeys across Latin America in an Austin Maxi to Jamie’s auctioneering experiences – how do you get a Bugatti into the Royal Albert Hall? – our conversation covered eight decades of reminiscences that highlighted why owning and driving classic cars is so special.

Listen to the podcast to hear all about their adventures and favourite cars and what the future might hold.
