Why did you join the ESG Ambassador Network at Knight Frank?
I signed up for the ESG Ambassador Network at Knight Frank because of my passion for environmental conservation. As an active environmental conservationist and a licensed Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Expert by the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA), I am deeply committed to understanding and promoting sustainable practices.
As an ESG Ambassador, I can delve deeper into the set of ESG practices that Knight Frank implements to limit negative impacts on the environment while enhancing positive ones. This includes learning about our sustainability initiatives, resource management strategies, and environmental stewardship efforts. I also have the opportunity to gain valuable insights into how our clients may manage their business operations and activities. This network aligns with my personal and professional goals of positively impacting our natural environment and promoting ESG values in the built environment.
What are you most passionate about?
I'm most passionate about sharing my dedication to environmental conservation and helping those in need in the local community – causes that truly ignite a fire within me. As a member of DECA (Destiny Equipping Child Association), a local charity organisation, I actively participate in various initiatives to positively contribute to society.
Through DECA, I work with a group that focuses on assisting orphans by offering them school uniforms and food supplies. We understand the importance of education and strive to ensure these children have the resources they need to thrive academically. By supporting their basic needs, we aim to alleviate some of their challenges and give them a brighter future.
Additionally, DECA is committed to environmental conservation, which drives us to take action to preserve our natural surroundings. Over the weekends, we organise visits to local schools to engage with students and involve them in tree-planting activities. By instilling a sense of environmental responsibility in the younger generation, we hope to create a sustainable future and protect the wellbeing of our ecosystems.
What is it about ESG that inspires you?
I find inspiration in the efforts of various organisations. For example, through its different offices globally, Knight Frank has demonstrated a solid commitment to sustainability and has implemented noteworthy conservation initiatives.
As seen in the picture below, I joined the Knight Frank Kenya Team on a tree-planting initiative at Kabage Forest in Nyeri County, Kenya. In taking part in this initiative, I truly felt I was living our purpose of enhancing lives and environments. I'm inspired by Knight Frank's efforts as they reinforce the importance of incorporating sustainable practices and environmental conservation in my work and personal life.
What do you see as the biggest opportunity for real estate?
The current economic situation has led to a rise in the cost of living, creating challenging spending conditions. However, there is hope. Landlords and property owners seek innovative solutions to attract and maintain competitive rates.
I believe technological advancements will play a part in this. We anticipate that the rise of technology will significantly impact the property market, specifically in relation to property management and home automation. The demand for smart homes will likely increase in the next 5-10 years, with individuals seeking integrated technologies that enhance convenience, security, and energy efficiency. As a result, there will be a growing need for landlords and property managers to adapt to these new technologies to remain competitive.
Sustainability will continue to play a crucial role in the future of real estate, and the importance of ESG compliance will grow. This shift in mindset will lead to increased demand for sustainable buildings, energy-efficient homes, and environmentally conscious practices. By focusing on sustainable practices, incorporating green technologies, and aligning with ESG principles, we can cater to the evolving preferences of environmentally conscious clients.
What is your call to action for others wanting to make a difference?
When it comes to making a difference and creating a positive impact, I am reminded of President John F. Kennedy's famous words, "Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country."
Relating this to the environment, it is time for us to ask ourselves what we can do to protect our planet.
Taking individual responsibility and action is my call to action for others who want to make a difference. Recognise that even small, everyday choices can have a significant impact. There are some practical steps that we can take, for instance:
- Stay informed about environmental issues and learn about sustainable practices
- Make conscious choices to reduce carbon emissions, be that business travel, commuting or buying local produce
- Use your voice to raise awareness about environmental issues and advocate for sustainable practices
- Participate in local environmental initiatives, volunteer with conservation organisations, or join community clean-up efforts. Engaging in hands-on activities can make a tangible impact and inspire others to do the same.
Remember, making a difference starts with individual action. Together, our collective efforts can create a significant positive change in protecting our environment and ensuring a sustainable future for future generations. So, let us ask ourselves, "What can I do to protect our environment?" and then take meaningful steps towards making a difference.
