_Mountain Living: Why now is the time to change altitude
The scenic vistas of the Alps alone are enough to attract a multitude of investors and second-home buyers, but for outdoor explorers, snow sports enthusiasts, and families that are looking for a high-quality lifestyle, the possibilities that come with Alpine living are endless.
Every year plenty flock to the glistening slopes of the Alps for a few weeks of skiing, but few really reap the full benefits that come with spending time long-term in the mountain ranges. ‘‘The best thing about mountain living,” says Charlie Raposo, Team GB Olympic skier who will this year be sponsored by Knight Frank, “is its ability to provide a better quality of life”.
Raposo certainly knows a thing or two when it comes to Alpine living. “What’s not to love? Waking up in the mountains to a sensational view, crisp mountain air, and a dusting of fresh snow; spending a few hours on the mountain skiing, or walking I may add, before returning home to start your working day.
“In the world we now live in, where remote working is becoming the new norm, and to many companies, a requirement, I don’t see there being any better place to be.”
It is fair to say that the Alps are seasonal – but each season offers totally different opportunities, with the summer months far less busy than the popular ski season. Tranquillity, beauty and an abundance of leisure opportunities – the Alps are certainly one of the world’s top natural destinations when it comes to wellbeing and appreciating a healthy, active lifestyle.
Find out our top five reasons for investing in the Alps:
- NON-SKIER APPEAL
Based on research undertaken by our Courchevel office, around 35% of visitors to The Three Valleys are now non-skiers. It is perhaps not surprising given the range of activities on offer – from Michelin starred restaurants to high-end retail as well as waterparks and mountain bike trails. The Alps are catering for a wider demographic, from young to old, allowing multiple generations of the same family to enjoy the landscape, with the slopes a perfect backdrop. - TECH UP
Technological advances are helping reduce the hassle of monitoring and maintaining a second home. Whether at a basic level – the installation of a webcam for security purposes, or a more advanced use of Wi-Fi enabled devices to switch the heating on before you arrive. Or a concierge style service that advises you or your tenants which lifts or slopes are the least congested, or apps that track your speed and performance against the rest of your party. - MAXING OUT
Resorts are joining forces to offer access to multiple resorts or domains. Switzerland’s Magic Pass now offers a season pass to 30 resorts including Villars, Crans-Montana and Grimentz, whilst in France the Mont Blanc Unlimited Pass provides access to the Chamonix Valley and beyond, including resorts across three countries. The Alps are mirroring trends in the US, offering skiers the chance to explore new pistes each day of their holiday. - FAMILY TIME
Quality family time in today’s world is under threat. Whether due to long working hours, corporate travel, extra-curricular activities or the all-consuming screen time, scheduling in uninterrupted family time remains a challenge for many. Increasingly, buyers cite this a key motive behind purchasing a ski home because it enables the family to spend more time together sharing a joint pursuit. - ALPINE FITNESS
The fitness and wellness industry has taken off in the last decade and the mountains have become the perfect base to pit yourself against the elements. Whether participating in an ultramarathon, cycling in the Etape du Tour (The Tour de France for non-professionals) or taking part in an Ebike festival, there is a packed calendar of events. Some serious enthusiasts have opted to buy a permanent Alpine base from which to train whilst others opt for short or long lets.
