Living in Fribourg
Picturesque and full of character, Fribourg is an amiable place and despite its medieval appearance it is thoroughly modern and cosmopolitan. The capital, also called Fribourg, straddles the river Sarine and is a bilingual town - French is spoken on the west side of the river and German on the east.
There are numerous excellent public and international schools within Fribourg and in the surrounding communities. The University of Fribourg is one of Switzerland’s most prestigious. Its five faculties (theology, law, social and economic sciences, languages and natural sciences) and 15 independent institutes (computer technology, journalism and more) attract thousands of students from all around the globe.
All winter and adventure sports are well-catered for in Switzerland - hiking, sailing, skiing, golf, horse riding and cycling to name a few. The nearest ski resorts are La Chia, Charmey, Jaun, La Berra-La Roche, Les Paccots, Moléson-sur-Gruyères, Rathvel and Schwarzsee. The possibilities for exploring the great outdoors in Fribourg are almost limitless. The Jura mountains in the west have much to offer hikers and cross-country skiers. While the lakes areas offer ample summer swimming, sailing and other water sport activities.
The cities of Fribourg are bustling centres of business and culture, offering a wealth of museums, galleries, theatres and restaurants. Smaller towns offer sophisticated relaxation in beautiful surroundings.
