The south of Italy is an emerging hotspot that is helping the country close the gap on traditional destinations for British buyers of international property, it has been stated.
The director of property sales service Homes in Italy, Mark Slaviero said that a number of southern locations were competing well in price terms with France and Spain, although at this stage those two countries are sure to remain ahead of Italy overall.
He stated: "Because of these new up and coming areas like Calabria and Puglia it's actually attracting a lot of buyers who thought they couldn't afford to buy in Italy."
Mr Slaviero said that Italy had been seeing gradual, rather than rapid growth in its property market.
This had now slowed rather than going into reverse as a result of the credit crunch, he added.
Recent research has shown Italy to be climbing as an international property buyer destination, with the country climbing from eighth to fifth in A Place in the Sun magazine's Top 20 Buying Destinations between last year and this.
