One of the attractive aspects of living in the south-east is its higher quality of life, a Brighton-based estate agent has said.
Charlie Snell, director of estate agency Brighton and Hove Family Homes, said the region offers better employment prospects, lower crime, longer life expectancy and better schools, plus better weather, with Eastbourne having more sunshine than anywhere else in Britain and Southend having the lowest rainfall.
He added that Brighton came out top of a poll of personal happiness, with 94 per cent being contented with their lot.
"I think this is to do with the fact that Brighton has all the attractions of a city while also being by the sea and the carefree attitude that being by the sea engenders," Mr Snell suggested.
Such elements may be factors in the comparatively high price of residential property in the region.
According to the latest Land Registry statistics, the average house price in the south-east is £229,289, whereas the average for England and Wales is £183,626.
