Portugal's appeal to international property investors lies in the fact that it has less imported English features than Spain, it has been suggested.
John Reilly, managing director of overseas property firm Buy Abroad, said the absence of the kind of Anglicisation that has been prevalent in some areas of its Iberian neighbour gave Portugal a special appeal for those who wanted to experience something less familiar.
He commented: "People are looking for a country that offers a mix of traditional things like tavernas rather than fish and chips and English pubs."
Mr Reilly said that this did not necessarily mean that areas such as the Algarve were more upmarket, despite claims to that effect from Portuguese developers, as the greater affluence of investors in that region was due to higher prices.
According to TV programme A Place in the Sun, Portugal is one of the best places to invest in property in Europe, with an average return of 360 per cent.
