A major commercial office and retail project has seen £70 million spent on the acquisition of a property in the heart of Leeds.

Highcross has bought the 300,000 sq ft building housing the former Lewis's and Allders apartment stores in the city centre, the Business Desk reports.

The plan is to turn the building into £169,000 sq ft of grade A office space plus four large retail units.

Director Richard Pellatt told the Business Desk the move was in response to the high demand for - and low supply of - high quality office space in the city centre.

"We will be meeting a significant need in the local market," he stated.

In another Leeds property development, Reland has been given outline planning permission by the city council for a mixed-use project off Hunslet road on the southern fringes of the city centre.

The three hectare brownfield site will include 707 homes as well as retail, entertainment, health and leisure facilities.
