A major commercial property plan for the town centre of Kirkby on Merseyside has moved a step closer to completion after it gained the almost unanimous approval of the local council.
The plan, jointly submitted by Tesco and Everton Football Club, would see a new superstore plus a 55,000 seat football stadium built in the centre of the town, alongside 50 retail units.
Councillors voted by 20 to one in favour of the £400 million project, which it believes will revive the fortunes of Kirkby town centre.
However, the matter may yet be referred to a public enquiry by communities secretary Hazel Blears as several neighbouring councils, including Liverpool, have objected on the basis that the new development would take away trade from their areas.
Everton's plans would see the club move out of the city of Liverpool, where it currently plays its home matches at Goodison Park.
A vote among the club's supporters saw 59 per cent backing the Kirkby move.
