The number of homes constructed in Britain is on course to continue dropping this year and next, it has been suggested.
The House Builders Association has predicted that the downturn in the housing market will lead to a further decline in new building to 1930s levels, with only 110,000 homes built this year, well short of government targets.
It may even dip further to 80,000 in 2009, the body has projected.
Commenting on the situation, Association spokesman Roger Humber said: "House builders are not going to be starting new sites, they're going to be laying people off, they may even be mothballing sites."
The chances of the government's housebuilding targets of over 200,000 a year being met have been increasingly questioned as the downturn in the market has taken hold.
Last week Financial Times blogger Jim Pickard described the plans as "increasingly hallucinogenic".
