In a major new commercial development Yorkshire County Cricket Club and Leeds Metropolitan University have announced that Headingley Carnegie Cricket Ground is to have a new pavilion.
Plans for the structure, which is scheduled to be completed by 2010, will include teaching facilities for the university, reports thebusinessdesk.com.
The club's chief executive Stewart Regan explained that the move was important as other major cricket grounds had undergone redevelopment and Headingley had to remain competitive when seeking to attract international cricket matches, a major source of income.
He warned: "In its current state, Headingley Carnegie cricket ground is facing the prospect of losing its Test match venue status in an increasingly competitive market."
The ground has staged many famous matches down the years and will stage an England v South Africa Test in July.
Leeds Metropolitan University has a campus at nearby Beckett's Park.
